I first met Billy Smith that I remember by walking in the Radio Studio in Fayetteville N.C. I had a copy of our Cannonball's record
"No Good To Cry" that would be about 1971. We talked he listened and I drove out of the downtown parking lot of the AM Station and he gave me just enough time to get into the car and he introduced it and Played it for the first time. Many other stations including Myrtle Beach Tiger (where he had worked) jumped on it and Billy had a lot to do with all of that. A year later when "You Keep Telling Me Yes" came out I am not sure even where Billy was working but I think in Myrlte Beach or Wilmington NC.
The last time I saw Billy I went to a club in North Myrtle Beach on the Water way with a good friend of his with intention of talking to Billy & others..but I never left Billy until I left there was to much to talk about.
By the way, he asked me if I could get him a fresh copy of that first record before I left...what a guy.
Billy gave me a reason to do a second record which gets played almost everday somewhere almost 40 years after we recorded it. He did more for the Music than the Music did for him.
But I would have to say it was close to a draw!!
